In 1949, he led them to their first Rose Bowl appearance and Big Ten Conference title since 1936.
The following year, they won a trip to the Florida Citrus Bowl. He was inducted into the Northwestern University Athletic Hall of Fame as a result. He played eight seasons at Northwestern before transferring to Colorado. Gary was appointed as Colorado’s 22nd head coach.
